What is the adequate maintenance test?

Have you noticed that some of the Immigration Rules require there to be ‘adequate maintenance’?

Ever wondered what this means? After income tax, National Insurance contributions and housing costs have been deducted, there must be available to the person or family the level of income or funds that would be available to them if the person or family was in receipt of Income Support.

Common mistakes are to include other costs in addition to housing costs. Housing costs means that deductions only need to be made for mortgage/rent and Council Tax payments.
